Nephrotic syndrome (NS) is a kidney disorder that causes your body to excrete too much protein in your urine, this can occur at any age, but is most common in children. Although there is no cure for nephrotic syndrome, but there are treatments that can help you manage symptoms and prevent more kidney damage.
To this end, the HAC has an interdisciplinary team comprise by professionals from the area of Paediatric Nephrology, Mental Health and Nutrition, which provide comprehensive care. With the aim of helping parents to better understand the disease and to remove any doubt. In addition to sharing experiences, the aforementioned Services offered informative workshops on this pathological condition. They are held on the fourth Wednesday of each month and are open to the community.
Dr. María Jesús Sandoval, paediatric nephrologist, commented that "This workshop was thought so that parents can have more information, providing them with support so that they can feel accompanied, we have made several meetings and they are very satisfied"
Then she added that "This disease is difficult to understand, that's why I always tell parents that they have to have a lot of patience, most of patients are between 4 and 5 years of age, some are bigger. There are children might do well with one medication, but not in others. So, exchanging experience and to get to know other realities helps them a lot”.
Meanwhile, the Nutrition Graduate Daniela Leiva said that "at workshop we offer practical ideas for feeding to help parents to carry out with their children, making a replacement of the most common foods for their age, through a nutrition education.
In other words, we try to work at the family level so that everyone acquires healthy habits. "It's always about educating and teaching them that they have the freedom to always be able to choose within the treatment, taking into account that children are growing, so we have to adapt to the needs at that moment, giving them calories and nutrients so they can continue with their growth".
Finally the Psychologist Juliana Rivero said that "I have to work on family support, accompanying family members to patients' adherence to medical treatment because it has several effect on different age groups due to changes in habits.
We put a lot of emphasis on awareness of the disease so they can understand it according to their age", she concluded.
